The
Location

Nairobi

Located in east Africa, Kenya may be known for its vast landscapes—from the coastline on the Indian Ocean to the savannah valleys. It also can’t go without mentioning the great number of species that make their homes in these lands, such as giraffes, elephants, lions, and rhinos. While there is much beauty to be seen in Kenya, brokenness paints the landscape as well with statistics such as these: 58% of Kenyans live on less than $2 a day; the unemployment rate sits at 40%, and less than 50% of children in the slum areas finish high school.

On this trip to Kenya, Engage partners with Jacaranda Community which is bringing beauty to the broken places. The mission of the Jacaranda Community is to meet the spiritual and physical needs of Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi. They do this by creating jobs for widows and single mothers and training them how to sew. They also provide care and protection for the children of these women through education and health care. As a part of this team, you will get to join with Jacaranda Community to participate in home/prayer visits and youth and children’s ministry in the slums of Nairobi.

Jacaranda Community
Motto:

Meeting spiritual and physical needs.

Focus:

Children’s Program / Job Training / Medical Care

The mission of Jacaranda Community is to meet the spiritual and physical needs throughout the city of Nairobi and to create a holistic, stronger and healthier family foundation. One aspect of this is done by training and creating jobs for widows and single mothers through the trade of sewing, while also providing care and protection for the children of these women through education and health care. As a part of the overall ministry, Jacaranda Kids seeks to provide children living in the slums with educational and spiritual opportunities. Also along these lines, Jacaranda Academics has centers in three slums and each center ranges in age from baby classes to preschool to primary classes. These centers were created in hopes to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness.
